125 light-years, much more than an anniversary

This year we are celebrating our 125 light-years. It’s the story of an energy that has travelled relentlessly through time to transform the world.

Since our foundation as Hidroeléctrica Ibérica in Bilbao on 19 July 1901, Iberdrola has come a long way to become Europe’s leading power utility by market capitalisation and one of the two largest in the world. Over the last 25 years, our growth and international expansion have consolidated us as a global group serving 100 million people and driving the internationalisation of hundreds of Spanish companies. Today, our investments and purchases support 120,000 jobs in Spain and more than half-a-million worldwide.

Our actions have made us global leaders, because we have never stopped believing in the power of energy to transform society.

It’s a journey we have made possible thanks to the contribution of our thousands of employees, working hand-in-hand with our shareholders, suppliers and many others whose collaboration and commitment have been key to the development of the regions in which we operate.

This anniversary is a tribute to all of those who, with an ever-innovative mindset and shared passion, have contributed their own energy to make history together.

But we are also celebrating the ambition to keep anticipating what comes next and the courage to embrace the new without ever losing our essence. Because the best is always yet to come.

To mark the occasion, we have prepared an extensive programme of activities including technology and art exhibitions, music festivals, social events and the restoration and illumination of iconic buildings.
